Max 18 months
What is the IR license?
The IR (Instrument Rating) allows a pilot to fly in low visibility conditions by using the aircraft’s instruments.
When a pilot obtains the instrument rating, they are authorized to fly following the same procedures and contact the same air traffic control agencies used by commercial aircraft.
To obtain the IR license, Asteraviation Flight Academy offers a highly professional and comprehensive training program.
Why obtain an instrument rating?
The IR (Instrument Rating) is a crucial step in the training process of a student who wants to become a professional pilot. It is one of the essential requirements requested by airlines for the recruitment of pilots.
The IR course is also highly beneficial for private pilots. It enhances safety by giving the pilot a deeper understanding of flight instruments, and it allows them to fly in Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC).
The Instrument Rating (IR) can be added to a Private Pilot License (PPL) or an Commercial Pilot License (CPL).
Course objectives
To obtain this license, it is necessary to already hold a PPL (Private Pilot License) for aircraft and have at least 50 hours of flight as Pilot in Command (PIC).
The Instrument Rating (IR) is the next step for a private pilot aiming to enhance their skills. This rating opens up new opportunities and provides deeper knowledge, requiring a corresponding level of commitment from the student.
The IR will be earned on a single-engine aircraft (IR-SE). For students interested in pursuing a professional pilot career and being hired by an airline, further training will be required after obtaining the IR to extend it to multi-engine aircraft (IR-MEP). The Multi-Engine IR is the rating required to fly multi-engine aircraft.
Requirements for the Instrument Flight Course
- PPL or CPL license.
- English language proficiency (radio communication) and TEA certification (minimum level 4).
- Class 1 or Class 2 medical certificate.
- Night Rating (NR).
- 50 hours of flight as PIC (Pilot in Command).
Structure and duration of the IR course
The instrument flight course is tailored to the needs of each student. During the training period, both theoretical and practical lessons will be conducted. Specifically, our course has a total duration of 250 hours, distributed as follows:
Il corso di volo strumentale, che deve essere completato in 18 mesi, viene organizzato ad hoc considerando le esigenze di ogni allievo. Durante il periodo di addestramento saranno svolte lezioni teoriche e pratiche. Nello specifico, il nostro corso prevede una durata complessiva di 250 ore, così distribuite:
Theoretical part
Consisting of 200 hours of theoretical lessons, either in the classroom or from home via the Distance Learning platform. Holders of the ATPL Frozen license will not be required to attend the theory course or take the theoretical exams.
Practical part
includes 50 hours of training with an Instrument Rating Instructor, of which:
➤ 10 hours on Piper PA28-151
➤ 20 hours on Piper PA28RT
