Requirements to Become an Airline Pilot
To become an airline pilot, you must attend a training course at an Approved Training Organisation (ATO), which is an aviation school authorized by the Ente Nazionale per l’Aviazione Civile (ENAC) to offer ATPL courses in Italy.
At an airline pilot school, you can obtain all the licenses and qualifications necessary to be hired by an airline and become an airline pilot.
To begin a modular ATPL training course, the following requirements must be met:
- You must be at least 16 years old to begin your training.
- You need to have passed a Class 1 medical examination, as required by European regulations. This ensures you meet the health standards to fly commercially.
Difference Between Modular ATPL Course and Integrated ATPL Course
Asteraviation offers to its cadets a modular ATPL course, which is divided into several consecutive modules.
The modular course provides greater flexibility to accommodate the individual needs of each cadet.
The integrated course, on the other hand, combines all the knowledge into a single intensive program. However, it must be completed within 24 to 36 months, and if the course is interrupted, no license is granted.
Structure and Duration of the ATPL Course in Italy
> ATPL Frozen: What is it?
The ATPL Frozen refers to the theoretical part of the Easa ATPL course. To obtain the ATPL Frozen a cadet must pass all the required ATPL theoretical exams in sessions organized by the Aeronautical Authority. The ATPL theory exam consists of 13 subjects, which must be successfully completed.
According to EASA regulations, it is possible to start working for an airline with a CPL (Commercial Pilot Licence) and an ATPL Frozen.
The ATPL (Full ATPL) license is required to pilot a commercial airliner as a captain. It can be obtained after a few years of working as a professional pilot with an airline or commercial operator.
The theoretical course for airline pilota (ATPL Frozen) organized by Asteraviation is flexible and tailored to the cadet’s availability. Programs are specifically designed for students, recent graduates, and professionals.
It can be completed in several formats:
- 650 hours of classroom theory;
- Integrating study on the Distance Learning platform with 250 hours of in-person classes (suitable for those who are working).

The ATPL theorical course subjects, divided into 5 exam days, are 13 in total:
Air Law, Aircraft General Knowledge -Airframe, Systems, Powerplant, Aircraft General Knowledge -Instrumentation, Mass and Balance, Performance, Flight Planning and Monitoring, Human Performance and Limitations, Meteorology, General Navigation, Radio Navigation, OperationalProcedures, Principles of Flight, Communications.
The candidate can only take the exam after passing the ATPL pre-test at the academy with a score of at least 85%. The preparation provided by Asteraviation is based on constant practice tests drawn from an official ATPL database which is regularly updated.
The cadet must take and pass all the exams for all subjects within a period of 18 months, calculated from the end of the month in which the first exam session is held.
