Flight Instructor (FI) Course

How to become a Flight Instructor

Asteraviation’s Flight Instructor (FI) course is designed to lead to the attainment of a Flight Instructor rating, which is required to professionally provide flight instruction and train other pilots to obtain the necessary licenses and ratings.

The program integrates theoretical preparation, instructional methodology, and practical flight training, with a particular focus on CRM and Human Factors.

What does a flight instructor do?

A Flight Instructor is a professional responsible for the practical training of pilots.

Their role is not limited to teaching how to fly an aircraft; they must also be able to impart procedures, a culture of safety, decision-making skills, and the proper use of available resources during flight.

The FI rating allows for the provision of the specific training required for the licenses and ratings for which the instructor is qualified.

Course objectives

The Flight Instructor (FI) course prepares the candidate to manage the training of other pilots effectively and safely.

Throughout the program, the candidate focuses on three main areas:
Theory
Consolidation of theoretical knowledge.
Method
Acquisition of teaching techniques and methodologies applied to aeronautical training.
Custom-made
Ability to adapt training to the characteristics and progress of the individual student.
The Asteraviation methodology also integrates CRM and Human Factors into the training of the future instructor.

Requirements for becoming a Flight Instructor

Per accedere al percorso è necessario soddisfare specifici requisiti relativi alla licenza posseduta e all’esperienza di volo. Il candidato deve:

Access with PPL(A) license

A candidate who holds only a PPL(A) license must also:

Have at least 200 total flight hours, of which 150 are as PIC
Having passed the CPL(A) theoretical knowledge examinations, as required by PART-FCL

How the course is conducted

The Flight Instructor course has an approximate duration of 3 to 5 months. This duration may be extended based on the candidate’s needs. The program includes theoretical training and practical instruction.

Theoretical training

The theoretical component consists of 125 hours of training covering applicable regulations, teaching techniques, and an understanding of the physiological and psychophysical factors that can influence students’ decision-making and learning.

Practical training

Alongside the theory, the candidate completes at least 30 hours of practical flight training in the Academy’s aircraft. The goal is to learn not only how to perform maneuvers correctly, but also how to demonstrate and explain them, and how to evaluate a student’s execution of them.

Why obtain an FI rating?

Becoming a flight instructor means adding a new qualification to your professional career and acquiring the skills necessary to train other pilots.

It is a role that requires flight experience, instructional skills, a focus on safety, and the ability to tailor instruction to the needs of the individual student.
